Interior decorating is not only only about big, bold pieces in the particular style you want to achieve. Like anything in life, the soul of a good design is in the details, and when it comes to home decor, those details are the lamps, decorative pillows, accent pieces, rugs, and yes, even toilet seat covers you place in your home.
The secret to achieving a consistent, elegant yet rustic Western feel for your home interiors is not to overcrowd your space with western artifacts and to choose your decor carefully. Of course, the second point requires a lot of patience.
We all want to have our homes decorated and ready to be shown to the visitors as soon as humanly possible. That sometimes leads us to severe cases of buyer's remorse after we have purchased a piece just to "fill that empty spot" without thinking how that particular piece fits into our larger decorating scheme. The trick to help you avoid this scenario is to decide up front if you are aiming for a more high-end Western Style or a rough, rustic feel. Then, before each purchase, ask yourself if that particular item fits your chosen style. If it does, the next question to ask is, "Do I absolutely love it?" If you can't respond with a resounding "yes," that item is best left on the retailer's shelf.
Now, you may think that you need to spend a lot of money if you decide to go with a higher-end Western Style for your home. This is not necessarily true. If you are at all crafty, you can make a lot of accent items, such as pillows, runners, drapes and curtains, and even some simpler pieces of furniture on your own for a fraction of the retail price. However, if you are all thumbs, don't despair. You are not relegated to the fate of big spending either. All that is required of you is to become a smart and patient shopper. That means you will have to learn how to practice restraint and how to set a budget. If a piece of decor you love has a price tag that is way higher than what you can afford at the moment, do not rush into buying a poor replica instead. Exercise patience while setting every spare dollar aside toward your "home decor fund." Once you have saved enough, go ahead and treat yourself to that special piece!
Now that you know how to be a smart decorator, it is time to give you a few pointers on what to look for in accent pieces to achieve that coveted Western Style.
Mood boards and style boards are always a good idea before you start any type of design or decorating project. In case of Western Style interiors, what you need to do is visualize a Western landscape. Notice the colors, textures, and materials that compose that landscape. If you live in the Western part of the U.S., go out on walks, hikes, and nature drives, and take lots of photos of things that catch your attention. If you don't live on a ranch or in the West, go to your local library, and read Western themed books and magazines to get some ideas. Then, make a decorating "blueprint" taking into account the following 5 principles:
