There comes a time in the lives of all women when our bodies start changing in the ways we never wanted or imagined. Those fiery red tresses start turning mousy grey, the circumference of the once enviable waist starts expanding, and things that were quite perky before now begin to sag. That time is usually called middle age, and for some of us, it truly makes us want to go back in time to the Middle Ages, when ample figure was highly valued in a woman. Unfortunately, as time machines have not been perfected yet, we have to make the best of the here and now and work with what we have trying not to lament too much over that which we have lost.
Despite the modern day push toward positive body image, there still remain some challenges for each and every one of us as we age. Colors we used to wear with great style in the past now make our greying heads look all washed out. Clothing styles that used to hug our young bodies so perfectly now accentuate every bump and wrinkle, and ever changing world of women's fashion no longer seems to treat us as kindly as it once did.
As a middle-aged woman, I have been experiencing all of the above to some extent over the last few years. I was once very confident in finding clothes that suit me well and had my favorite, go-to brands. Suddenly, I discovered that those brands don't fit me any more, and despite being a total shopping trip hater, I had to spend countless hours browsing the Internet and local shops for the kind of clothes that would fit me both style-wise and size-wise. All that with no to very little success, I might add. Then, I discovered Personal Styling services, but more about that in another post. What struck me is that, despite enlisting a personal stylist, one cannot look well unless one knows what colors and styles suit her in the first place. Most of us are not independently wealthy to the point where we can fill our closets with pieces we'd wear once or twice at the most. Most of us want a "capsule wardrobe" that will not cost us an arm and a leg. Achieving this becomes exponentially more difficult if one is naturally drawn to western and boho styles as most new fashions in these two styles are geared toward younger women.
Still, there is something we can do: learn the color palettes that suit greying heads and familiarize ourselves with clothing styles that solve "problems of the bulge" depending on our body shapes. That's where fashion meets faith. Literally! Fashion Meets Faith is the brain child of Shari Braendel, an experienced image consultant who turned her passion for fashion into a Christian ministry. I came across Shari's website by accident (now, let's be real - NOTHING happens entirely by accident) while searching for different personal styling services. I discovered her Color E-nalysis tool while I was searching on advice regarding the colors that complement greying hair, and I was thrilled that I'd finally get some answers.
The analysis consists of three steps, first of which takes into account your natural hair color. The second considers your eye color, and the third the color of your complexion. When you receive your results, you will not only be given the basic colors to wear. Recommended color intensity for your clothing and colors for makeup, accessories, shoes and purses will also be offered. If you are an artist by nature, you can take it from here. For those who need more help, Shari has a Blog, a Podcast, and offers different Courses you can take. By the time you've completed them, you'll have a whole new outlook on fashion styling regardless of what stage in life you are going through. For one, I no longer consider my middle-age woes a barrier to great style.
Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off clothes shopping!
