We are so blessed to be living in an area as beautiful as the Black Hills of South Dakota!
The Hills teem with wildlife and abound in beautiful sights any time of the year, but fall just happens to be a very special time. From fall festivals, the annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup, art shows and sales to the simple natural beauty of Spearfish Canyon, there is something here for everyone's enjoyment during the months of September and October.
Our family has established the tradition of making our annual fall trip to the Spearfish Canyon, an area where fall colors abound this time of the year, about an hour and a half drive from our home in Rapid City. Our favorite area in the Canyon is by far the Roughlock Falls area. With its crystal clear creek, a beautiful waterfall, well maintained picnic and observation areas as well as more parking spaces than other waterfalls in the Canyon, Roughlock Falls is our go-to place for fall foliage viewing.
With a photography enthusiast in the family (no, that's not me), it's a no-brainer that we would head out to the Falls every year. Not only do the Falls themselves look different every time depending on the amount of foliage surrounding them any particular year, but the area also makes a wonderful backdrop for portrait and pet photography. Our late English Setter enjoyed his annual trips to the Falls almost as much as we did. The squirrels and chipmunks, the abundance of birds, the scent of deer, elk, and bighorn sheep in the air, and even an occasional snake on the path made for a great sensory indulgence for him. Now that he is no longer with us, we decided to pass this fun tradition on to our new furry family member. This was our little Irish Setter's first outing of the kind, and she seemed to thoroughly enjoy it.
From jumping into the ice cold creek to pointing birds and chasing squirrels, not only was her day full, but we also got plenty of opportunities for some good fall photography.
Matching outfits contributed to the fun and showed off our fashion sense. Of course, we have to represent our brand to the best of our ability no matter where we are.
We have found that the secret of getting good fall foliage photos is getting to Spearfish Canyon exactly at the time when colors are peaking. If one arrives there too early, there are too many greens mixed in with golden yellows. If on the other hand one gets there too late, half of the deciduous trees would have already shed all of their leaves making for a pretty barren scene. This year, we braved cold, wind, and drizzle to be in Spearfish Canyon just at the right time, and it shows.
Apparently, as the residents of Western South Dakota, we are very proud of the beautiful scenery in our area. However, we are hardly the only ones with great displays of fall colors. Every part of this great country has its own little fall foliage heaven. Your task this week is to find it and enjoy the fleeting beauty to the fullest while it lasts.
