The APTA and the Transit app provide a dashboard that tracks transit demand and publishes weekly ridership estimates.

The American Public Transportation Association (APTA) has partnered with the Transit app to track transit demand and publish weekly ridership estimates for agencies across the United States.

Transit agencies, which have relied on monthly or quarterly reports, can use the new APTA Ridership Trends dashboard as another way to collect data to help make service level decisions during the pandemic. . They can track up-to-date ridership trends and benchmark themselves against their peers, APTA reported.

How does the dashboard work? The partners explained it this way:

“The percentages displayed in this dashboard represent the percentage difference between the actual ridership before the pandemic and the estimated ridership for a given period during the pandemic.

“The pre-pandemic figures we use to calculate this percentage are the actual ridership figures reported by the agencies for the corresponding period from February 2019 to February 2020.

“The estimated values for each week are statistically modeled on the basis of measurements of use of the Transit application and do not represent the actual number of passengers declared by the agencies. Use of the app is assigned to a particular transit agency if that agency’s service appears as a nearby option for the user when they open the app.

The transit app usage statistics count how often the app is opened, providing a measure of transit demand, and take into account additional factors such as regional trends and location. current severity of the pandemic. “

The partners said the Transit team is also analyzing origin-destination data at the route level and system-wide to provide up-to-date passenger demand information in the dashboard.

According to Transit, polls have shown that its user demographics “largely reflect transit use in general in the United States, including during the pandemic.” The company has provided real-time transit demand tracking on its website since the start of the pandemic, and found that its demand metrics closely track actual ridership statistics. “

“The number of people using our app to get transit information is a great barometer for estimating overall ridership in near real time,” said David Block-Schachter, Commercial Director of Transit. “In collaboration with APTA, we were able to refine this data to provide information to the entire industry. “

“Agencies across the country need up-to-date information to help them make critical business decisions during this unprecedented pandemic,” noted APTA President and CEO Paul P. Skoutelas. “This new partnership will benefit our members and riders across the country. “
