Platform and canopy improvements and new high-level accessible platform will improve safety and customer experience at the Vital Transit Hub

NEWARK, NJ – NJ TRANSIT The Board of Directors today approved a contract for comprehensive design services and construction support services for the canopy, platform and accessibility improvements at the Trenton Transit Center. The contract is part of a $29 million effort to rehabilitate two existing platforms and their associated canopies, elevators and escalators, as well as convert a low-level platform into a fully accessible with elevator access. The project will promote increased safety and convenience for customers, increase capacity, reduce maintenance costs and alleviate congestion on platforms.

“NJ TRANSIT is pleased to advance significant improvements in one of our state’s most essential multimodal transit hubs,” said Kevin S. Corbett, president and CEO of NJ TRANSIT. “Ultimately, this project will create a safer, more modern and more accessible Trenton transit hub – with added capacity and convenience for the thousands of customers who use it every day.”

In action today, the board awarded a $1.9 million contract to AECOM Technical Services, Inc. for all phases of design and construction support for this project.

The scope of work on both island platforms will include replacing the existing deteriorating wooden platform sections with a more durable concrete platform, adding new touch strips and rub rails, reconstruction of platform deck joints and repair of concrete spalls. The deteriorated canopies that were last rebuilt in 1992 will also be restored. The existing low-level platform will be upgraded to a high-level platform with a larger waiting shelter and a new lift from the concourse above. In the past, NJ TRANSIT had upgraded the main station entrances and the pedestrian overpass at the Trenton Transit Center.

NJ TRANSIT has been selected as one of 11 other transit agencies nationwide to receive a competitive state of good standing grant from the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) that will be used in part to fund this project. The $18.2 million grant represents the federal share of the infrastructure improvement project totaling nearly $29 million.

A station has existed on the site since 1863. New stations have been built to replace old and obsolete ones several times throughout history; in 1893, 1976, and most recently by NJ TRANSIT in 2008 when new station buildings were constructed on the north and south sides of the tracks, including a new passenger concourse on the tracks connecting the two.


NJ TRANSIT is the nation’s largest statewide public transportation system, offering more than 925,000 weekday rides on 253 bus lines, three light rail lines, 12 commuter rail lines and via the Access Link paratransit service. It is the nation’s third-largest transit system with 166 rail stations, 62 light rail stations, and more than 19,000 bus stops connecting major points in New Jersey, New York, and Philadelphia.
